We rarely think about it, but shipping has come a long way, especially in the last 150 years. 150 years ago products were being shipped in wood crates and barrels and sacks. The amount of manual labor required for shipping in this manor was extensive too. Without heavy equipment available like there is today and no real standard size for shipping containers it was difficult to streamline the process. As we moved closer to World War II a semblance of standardization began to take effect. We saw wooden crates become more prevalent along with more equipment that could move them quickly and effectively.
